Domino | lyric video

Using dynamic camera movement, wireframe designs, and typography to create an energetic motion graphics project.

I completed this project as a part of my Motion Design class at Kendall College of Art and Design. Early in storyboarding, I had the idea to make the project reminiscent of a certain online era, around 2011-2012, emphasizing the unique look of Windows 7 and the popular applications of the time. To do this, I had to find and recreate the old UI’s in Figma. I elected to use the Figma plugin “AEUX” to convert Figma layers into After Effects shape layers.

Overall, I’m happy with how the project turned out, and I think I captured and retained the song's energy pretty well throughout the project. My peers in class also gave me great critiques that helped me finalize this piece to a level I’m happy with.

01 - concept & ideation

Motion Design

Compositing

UI Design

These are my storyboards and scene concepts early on into my ideation phase. Originally, this project was going to use the song “Ain’t It Fun” by Paramore, but after hearing Domino, I got reeled in by the nostalgia. However, most of my scene concepts remained the same or were very similar to my original boards.

02 - ui designs

These are the wireframes I created in Figma for animation in After Effects.

I used the Figma plugin “AEUX” to transfer my Figma layers into shape layers inside of After Effects.

03 - interaction animations

Skype micro-interactions and interaction animations. Used in the greater composition.

I wanted to create an old, nostalgic UI, with a conversation that’s believable of the time.

This old YouTube comment section portion of the project was super awesome to make. Plenty of timing and smooth camera moves to make this both readable and fluid.

I used old XBOX-360 profile pictures to especially sell the time.
